Hiszpański naukowiec wyhodował pierwszą na świecie hybrydę ludzko-małpy w laboratorium w Chinach, która  mogła się urodzić – ale proces został przerwany.

Scientists have created a hybrid embryo by genetically modifying monkey embryos to deactivate genes necessary for organ formation.

 

Następnie wstrzyknęli zarodek ludzkim komórkom macierzystym – które są zdolne do tworzenia wszelkiego rodzaju tkanki – do zarodka.

While the groundbreaking experiment is an important step toward using animals for human organ transplants, it had to take place in China to avoid "legal issues."

 

Zarodek został zniszczony w 14 dniu ciąży – punkt zwany „czerwoną linią” – co oznacza, że embrion nie mógł rozwinąć centralnego układu nerwowego.

Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte was also responsible for creating the first human pig hybrid in 2017.

The scientist said his team had conducted "the first human and pig chimera experiment in the world," albeit with less success.

A genetic chimera, or chimerism, is a single organism composed of cells from different individuals.

 

„Ludzkie komórki nie wytrzymały. Widzieliśmy, że w bardzo niewielkim stopniu przyczyniły się one do rozwoju zarodka: jednej ludzkiej komórki na 100 000 komórek świńskich – powiedział kolega profesora Izpisua, weterynarz Uniwersytetu Kalifornijskiego Pablo Ross.

The team was then able to create chimeras between similar species, such as a rat and a mouse, which are five times closer than humans and pigs.

Project collaborator Estrella Núñez called the experiment "very promising."

„Obecnie staramy się nie tylko iść naprzód i kontynuować eksperymentowanie z komórkami ludzkimi, komórkami gryzoni i świń, ale także z naczelnymi niebędącymi ludźmi” – powiedział profesor Izpisua.

„Nasz kraj jest pionierem i światowym liderem w tych badaniach” – dodał.

The team now intends to continue experimenting with human, rodent and pig cells, as well as non-human primates.
