Ryan Pan, manager at the Haidilao Hot Pot in Vancouver, confirmed that over 60 surveillance cameras have been installed in the restaurant commissioned by the Haidilao Corporation, as part of the social credit system in China. He said the Vancouver location has 30 tables with two cameras assigned to each table.
Ryan Lord said. The cameras were installed to "punish" staff, if they don't follow corporate standards and "track people." The gentleman also said the video is being sent back to China, but declined to explain why, other than to say the reason is "secret."
Haidilao has more than 935 locations worldwide and more than 36 million VIP members and over 60,000 employees. The editors of an article about social credit in Canada contacted Ivy Li, with Canadian Friends of Hong Kong, a well-known public speaker, writer and activist on China and pro-democracy issues, to ask why Canadians should be concerned that China's social credit system is now operating in Canada. Ivy, who was born and raised in Hong Kong, responded:
"Not only are ethnic Chinese and residents and companies with ties to China at risk, but the privacy and security of all Canadians and our society are at risk .
